About our Operators

The Nantucket Regional Transit Authority (NRTA) was created by Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 161B in 1993, although operations did not begin until 1995. The NRTA is a body politic and corporate and a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Office of Transportation and Public Works. According to the statute, regional transit authorities cannot operate service directly, but instead must contract with private operators for the provision of service. The NRTA contracts with two private transportation providers.
